The name 'Mildura' comes from the name of the homestead which overlooked a sheep station that covered most of the local land. Not including many of the outlying townships, Mildura's population is approximately 35,000 (approximately 60,000 including townships) and is most notable for its agricultural industry. According to the Mildura Rural City Council, the region supplies around 80% of Victoria's grapes, however it is also a large supplier of nuts, citrus and wine. Tourism also contributes a large portion of revenue to the area. About $210 million comes from this industry annually with domestic travellers making up the larger percentage.Mildura has a semi-arid climate and often experiences hot summers and cool winters (record high of 46.9 degrees and record low of -4 degrees). Mildura is part of a Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone so fruit and vegetables may not be brought into the area (you can take them out though) as the introduction of this pest to the area could have a devastating effect on the local economy. 82% of households in Mildura are Australian born, with Turkish, Italian, English, New Zealand and Greek households making up the largest minority percentages.

Mungo National Park
Remember the 'Mungo Man'? In 1974 the remains of a person estimated to have died 64,000 years ago were discovered in this national park. This area of Australia has many traces of cultural heritage and would take weeks to explore thoroughly. The national park offers a range of guided tours, scenic walks, drives and bicycle tours as well as camping tracks.
Mildura Wineries
The Murray-Darling region, which has 800 growers and 15,000 hectares of vineyards, has been dubbed the "engine room" of Victorian wine. It is home to 20% of our country's vineyards.

Paddle Steamer Cruises
Mildura offers three paddle steamer cruises which depart at different times during the day, all on different journeys. You can book a winery cruise to Trentham Wine Estate, a luncheaon cruise to the Gol Gol Hotel and dinner cruises aboard the PV Rothbury (or PV Mundoo if numbers too large). It's also worth doing an expedition through Mildura's famous Lock 11 on the P.S. Melbourne (this occurs twice daily).
Mildura Rio Vista Homestead
The Rio Vista Homestead was the local residence of the Chaffey Family whom settled in the area around 1892. The name (translated as 'River View') pays homage WB Chaffey's history in California. It was purchased by the Mildura City Council in 1950 and is now used as an art gallery.
